For the past 26 years, the Australian Government has provided YLA with a modest amount of annual funding. It has never been enough to meet the immense need for legal help for children and young people. But the funding has been the lifeblood of our small but efficient team.
Devastatingly, the Australian Government’s offer of funding fir the coming financial year will only allow YLA to service approximately 1,100 clients out of the estimated 4,400 that seek to contact us annually.
We receive the greatest number of requests from NSW residents. In fact, our services to children under 18 years of age in NSW accounts for a third of the total legal services provided by community legal centres in NSW to this age group. But despite providing a major state-wide service in NSW, we have never received any annual funding from the NSW Government.
So, we’ve launched the Fund Justice For Children Now campaign to call on the Australian and NSW Governments to provide us with ongoing, sustainble funding.
Please join our campaign and urge the governments to take their commitment to children’s rights and safety seriously.
We’ve prepared an email for you to send to the Australian Attorney-General, Christian Porter. Please feel free to edit the email and add your own personal comments.
